The Extension Ladder - Helpful Hints

Defined Tag:

The brilliance and simplicity of the extension ladder has made so many jobs a breeze for so many people. Who hasn't cursed when grabbing their ladder and find that they are just not going to reach where they need to go?  Having an extendable version is wonderful as you can use it as a normal lay against the wall type for average heights and then you can extend it to rather much higher heights without much fuss at all.

Most being able to expand to a height nearly as tall as a three story building, this option is perfect if you need to climb atop your home or workplace. But don't be fooled as they too still need to be used with safety precautions in use.

First and foremost you will need to make sure that your weight combined with whatever supplies you are using is going to be supported. A well built man with a heavy tool belt can easily exceed the maximum limit of weight allowed, thereby rendering it totally unsafe for him to climb. Once you have done your calculations and are confident that you will not be too heavy, you will need to find a firm and flat piece of ground that you can safely place the ladder on. You then use the pulley system built in to extend the top piece as high as you need it to go.

Before you start climbing up you must also make sure the wall or surface that you will be leaning against is safe and stable.  Always check that there are no power lines or open cables near by as with most extendable versions they are made from aluminum meaning that they can conduct electricity and you could electricute yourself or start a fire.

You must also understand the ladders limits.  By this I mean do not over extend it as this can put unwarranted pressure on the framework and this could make your extension ladder break leaving you with only one option and that is to fall from a very high position.
